Women in Web 3: Gianina Skarlett, creator of Crypto Tech Women
Plus, Elon Musk is now Twitter's largest shareholder
As I mentioned in a previous newsletter, talking to women in the Web 3 / cryptocurrency space is one of my passions.
And this week, I caught up with Gianina Skarlett, the found of the NFT project Crypto Tech Women. That’s one of the larger female-centric NFT projects on Ethereum. Gianina has been coding since she was sixteen, and currently works as a software engineer.
Read on for our conversation:
Q: What attracted you to Web 3/ crypto?
Gianina: “I had a group of friends who were doing really well with crypto and took me under their wing in 2017. They introduced me to the crypto market and crypto currencies. I got into web 3, meaning NFTs and that space, after hearing Gary B talk NFTs. What attracted me to it was really after learning solidity and and how a contract is code. It really made me realize the potential of NFTs. I also love the low entry barrier. You don’t have to be a software engineer, or you don’t have to be an artist. You can be a collector, or you can bring your expertise from Web 2 into the Web 3 space and build amazing relationships and build something you love.”
Q: How do you hope Crypto Tech Women will connect women?
Gianina: “One of the ways is by doing real life events, and also online events where women get together, they get to talk about their experience in Web 3, maybe they are doing a master class. It’s about finding things that they have in common, and creating this bond, whether it is online or in real life.”
Q: What do you think is the biggest challenge for women in tech?
Gianina: “One of the biggest challenges is ourselves, feeling secure enough and confident enough to apply for those jobs that sometimes we don’t apply for because we don’t feel we are 100 percent capable of them. Also, we need to remove this mindset of, ‘oh, I’m a woman, and because I am a woman, I need to do twenty times better than a guy in order to get hired.’ In reality, we just need to be more confident in putting out our skills correctly. Definitely the biggest challenge for women in tech is the gender bias that there is, and breaking this gender bias is one of the things that I am very passionate about.”
Q: Right now, we are in a so-called “crypto winter”. What are your thoughts on that?
Gianina: “Things that happen around the world obviously affect the market, but right now NFTs are very strong, and Ethereum is very strong, so I think as with everything in the world we have to be very careful with our investments, be conscious that the markets are not stable. I think it’s all in how you see it. If you didn’t overinvest, if you invested comfortably, and the markets go low and you have a bear market, it’s a great time to buy those assets that you believe in.”
Q: What do you say to people who are new to, or skeptical of, NFTs?
Gianina: “For people that are new to or skeptical of NFTs, I think the first part of it all is education. From there I want to see where at the gaps, and what are the things they might want to understand better. Sometimes people don’t fully understand what NFTs are or why they should care. I definitely don’t try to convince anyone that they need to enter the NFT space. I usually start with what it is, then I talk about the possibilities that you can do with it. You really do have to go through the whole picture, but it is still in a beginner friendly language.”
