Dear subscriber,
It’s all bad.
And probably, bad is an understatement at this point. This bear market is ferocious, and there are no good short term options for investors right now. Not stocks. Not bonds. Not crypto. Not cash. Not commodities.
Not much of anything.
I don’t know what’s ahead. Frankly, nobody does. This economy has serious issues that must be rectified—broken supply chains, weak labor participation, low growth, too much money circulating…
It’s going to take a bigger brain than mine to fix this junk.
But make no mistake here—it will get fixed at some point. Either solutions will show up to solve the current system, or the free market will ultimately correct itself. There’s no question that the process will be painful, and there will be collateral damage, but the cycle will turn at some point. It’s simply how things are— good times never last, and bad times always end.
What did I do yesterday?
I bought. Just a little—but I still did it. Did it hurt? Yes. Am I down on my investment? Yep. Did I feel like I wanted to throw up when I hit the buy button? You betcha.
I’m not sorry that I did any of it. This is the fourth major macro market crash I’ve been through (Dot com bubble/ 9-11, Great Recession, COVID-19 Panic Crash, and now whatever we’re about to call this). It’s never easy, but it hurts less and less each time.
There’s a lot of blood on this battlefield, but that also means there is a lot of opportunity. People are scared, retail investors have fled, and the ones left standing truly believe in this asset class. Despite the mess, there is plenty of value left.
Make no mistake—fortunes will be made of this terrible moment and they will be made by people who find the good that has been thrown out with the bad.
Monday night, as the rough day ended, we welcomed the folks from SliceSpace to the Crypto Connection Twitter space I help run each week. The SliceSpace project hopes to bring commercial real estate investment to to the masses through tokenization. It’s a novel idea, and if it works this could be a huge opportunity for investors. Real estate ownership is and always will be a pillar of wealth building. Simple as that. For many investors, commercial real estate is an impossible and opaque asset class.
Maybe it doesn’t have to be that way.
